Trump Said Benjamin Netanyahu Congratulating Biden for Winning Was the ‘Ultimate Betrayal’

When former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated Joe Biden on his electoral win, it apparently threw former president Donald Trump into a snit, according to the book Landslide: The Final Days of The Trump Presidency, by Michael Wolff.

“It was startling to aides, however much they were anticipating an eruption, that Trump’s wrath fell on Bibi Netanyahu,” Wolff wrote, per Forward.

When the election was called in favor of Biden by the media on November 7, Netanyahu posted a tweet congratulating Biden and saying he was looking forward to working with him “to further strengthen the special alliance between the U.S. and Israel.

And as the world knows, Trump stubbornly refused to accept defeat and later incited the riots that took place at the Capitol building on Jan. 6. He still continues to challenge the election results. Apparently, Netanyahu also called and congratulated Biden a week later.

Wolff reports Trump didn’t handle Netanyahu’s congratulations to Biden particularly well, even telling his aides that the “tweet came before the ink was dry,” and was an “ultimate betrayal.”

“As in all Trump reactions, a variety of grievances welled up here,” Wolff writes in the book, scheduled to be published on July 13. “There was his belief that he had singularly done more for Israel than any American president — and that therefore he was owed. And now sold out.”

But the relationship between Trump and Netanyahu has long been a complicated one, with Trump grousing in 2019 that he was unable to begin the rollout of his Middle East peace plan because Netanyahu had failed to form a government. He also voiced his disappointment in 2016 when Netanyahu criticized his plan to ban Muslims from entering the U.S. So he retaliated by canceling a trip to Israel.

While Netanyahu congratulated Biden he still had to fight to avoid a public rift with Trump and he continued to do this even after Trump left office. He studiously avoided being friendly with Biden and hesitated to speak warmly about the new president.

Biden will host Israel’s new Prime Minister Naftali Bennett later this month at the White House, but Trump, for his part, has apparently not invited Netanyahu to spend a weekend at his Bedminster, New Jersey golf club.

But this sounds pretty typical for Trump. He may be the biggest sore loser the U.S. has seen in a long time. Maybe even ever.
