Dems Introduce Bill to Eliminate Pensions and Perks for Presidents With Felony Convictions

Democrats plan to introduce legislation that would revoke a former president’s lifetime pension and other perks of the job if that president is convicted of a felony during or after office, The Hill reports.

Rep. Sean Patrick Maloney (D-N.Y.), leader of the Democrats’ campaign arm, and Progressive Caucus Chair Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) are the authors of the Restoring and Enforcing Accountability of Presidents (REAP) Act. The measure would reform the Former Presidents Act of 1958 by stripping past presidents of their annual $219,000 pension, office space, and funding to pay for staff. Lifetime Secret Service protection will still be provided.

The measure is scheduled to be formally introduced Thursday when Maloney and Jayapal began adding co-sponsors.

While the REAP Act doesn’t mention any former presidents by name it isn’t difficult to figure out who this is aimed at. After all former President Donald Trump was only recently acquitted by the Senate after being charged by the House with inciting the deadly riots on Jan.6th and he’s facing numerous criminal and civil investigations into his taxes and family business.

Earlier this week the Supreme Court paved the way for Cyrus Vance Jr., Manhattan’s District Attorney, a Democrat, to access eight years of Trump’s tax returns and other financial records, The Hill notes.

Maloney and Jayapal note that laws are laws and that being powerful doesn’t mean a person is exempt from prosecution if they break a law.

“Breaking the law has consequences — no matter how powerful you are, or were. Presidents who are convicted of a felony should not receive taxpayer-funded benefits,” Maloney, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee Chair said in a statement. “It’s that simple. The fact that this bill is now necessary in America brings me no joy, but we must demand accountability from those who have held our nation’s highest office.”

And Jayapal, unlike many Republicans, isn’t willing to let Trump get away with what he did.

“While Congress must refuse to let Donald Trump off the hook for inciting a deadly insurrection and for committing countless other crimes during his lawless presidency,” she added, “we must also ensure that no president who is ever convicted of a felony receives taxpayer-funded benefits.”

That’s why she believes the legislation is necessary.

“The REAP Act is an important step towards finally securing full accountability and justice in this country,” she said.

There are many things Trump needs to account for — not just his taxes and other financial misdeeds. Despite what Republicans are trying to pull off, he really did incite the riots at the Capitol and baselessly claimed the election was “stolen” and promulgated one lie after another that his gullible followers eagerly believed. I mean, this is a man who told so many lies it’s hard to know where they end and he begins.

So yeah, let the accountability begin.
