Trump Says that Without COVID, He Would Likely Beat George Washington in the 2020 Election

We have a current president who thinks that he has done more than any president in history, that he is treated worse than Abraham Lincoln, that he really does belong on Mount Rushmore, and now he is saying that had COVID not hit the United States, that George Washington would have had a hard time beating him. Donald Trump is very impressed with himself, no?

From CNN’s Kaitlan Collins:

There are obviously a lot of things to unpack here, not the least of it is that Trump is losing to Biden by 10 today in the Real Clear Politics average, which is only four points greater than January 1st (which is a little scary). COVID has hurt Trump but not fundamentally altered the race.

The other point to be made is that people want to rally around a president in a crisis. A crisis can help unify the American people. Doing a good job with respect to the epidemic might have forced some Americans to reevaluate their position on Trump, if the U.S. was leading the world in fighting off the disease. And yet Trump’s position implies that there is nothing he could’ve done to improve his political standing through COVID. It is actually just the opposite. It seems that it still hasn’t occurred to him that if all he’s interested in is getting reelected (and that IS all he is interested in) then doing a very good job handling the disease is the best vehicle.

But at each turn he’s made the wrong call. He has continued to downplay the disease, telling people it will “disappear” and basically acting as though life should go on as if nothing is occurring, open the schools, play football, have rallies!

The other thing that Trump can’t seem to avoid is comparing himself to the giants. He wants to be thought of as “Rushmore-worthy,” the guy who had it worse than Lincoln, the guy that Washington couldn’t have beaten. This is the man who doesn’t understand how World War II ended, doesn’t understand “healthcare is hard,” believes he has “Article II” which allows him to do whatever he wants … we could go on and on, yet he believes he’s right there, Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt … Trump.

Awful.
