Is Trump About to Resign? Several Big Clues Are Coming Together

There is a line of thought, a good one, that Trump is far too arrogant and aggressive to resign. Despite that conventional wisdom, we gave him 50-50 odds of making it through July. Given that it is August 2nd, he made it this far. But there are a ton of signs that he’s is either preparing to resign, or he doesn’t know what he wants to do but wants that door open and available.

Too arrogant?

That’s precisely why he might resign. He might not be able to face what’s about to come. He has to know that if the election were held today he’d get waxed and would have to fight illegally to stay in power, which is a massive risk. Yes, the GOP has a great record at stealing elections, but they’re not perfect and the country is in bad enough shape that if Biden is polling nine points ahead on election day, it won’t accept a miracle Trump victory, nor a drawn-out fight.

Moreover, reports are that he isn’t having fun being president right now. He doesn’t get to have rallies – the thing that he loves most. He likely knows that the country is in deep deep trouble with COVID and the economy. Being president is now very challenging. People expect things. Plus, there are serious questions about his taxes that are about to start coming up in New York – he lost the New York SCOTUS case cleanly. Even Scotland now has an investigation that is set to blow him up politically. So the threats are there, but as with everything, it’s generally about him and his mood. It’s not fun, and won’t be for a long time. This is fun:

There are several necessary components coming together:

First, and always with Trump, watch the money. The Trump campaign canceled a major TV ad buy last week. They say it tested badly and they want to reevaluate. Okay, but it also saves them a ton of money just coming up to the convention. If he’s planning on resigning, he’ll want every damned dollar available to steal in some way. Also, did they buy a shitload of Kodak shares two weeks ago? We can’t discount it, someone did.

If he resigns it will surely be ascribed to health reasons. Just yesterday we wrote that insiders are telling author Don Winslow that Trump has had three small strokes. The rumors are everywhere that he is sick and went to Walter Reed late yesterday.

Some say the bruise on his hand looks exactly like the type one gets with an IV. That may be true, it is also true that older people bruise far more easily. Still … the rumor about the Walter Reed visit? It started somewhere. Plus, he looks terrible:

But we don’t just have to look at him. For some strange reason, the GOP has banned the media from the Republican convention where they “renominate” Trump – which is just so odd.

Wait. Having a “closed” convention due to COVID is one thing, totally banning the media is quite another. If they are going to have a convention of whatever sort, it makes no sense to ban the media unless they anticipate – or have to leave the door open for – an utter blood bath to nominate someone. They can say “We banned the media before Trump even stepped down!” Or the GOP wants to put Nikki Haley and-or Romney on a ticket without being sure who is going to be on top and intends to help push Trump out.

The GOP convention thing alone doesn’t say much. But with everything else?

Trump won’t do it as a matter of principle. He won’t say that he’s seen the polling and understands that new leadership is needed. He will say that the doctors won’t let him run again, that it’s not safe – and he’s already made America great again. He will get to say that he would have beaten Biden, for sure. Then he could get a pardon for every federal crime from Pence, and go start his media empire, fly his own helicopter and plane, without having the hassle of worrying about the country. He figures he can fight New York’s charges.

It is hard to say whether Trump stepping down would be good or bad for Biden. What we know is that Trump has set everything up to go, either way, step down, or fight it out in an attempt to steal the election. We don’t discount the fact that he’s fundamentally weak and soft. He is also scared, and a chance to bail might be too good to resist. He has filed for bankruptcy a handful of times, this wouldn’t be all that different. He gets a clean slate on life, he gets to say he woulda’ won! He can say it’s not his fault! And he’d get to go have fun, much richer for it.
