Trump Just Thanked Karen Pence For Working at a School That Bans LGBT Children

Donald Trump praised second lady Karen Pence on Thursday, telling attendees of the National Prayer Breakfast she is “incredible,” amid her return at a Virginia school that has drawn scrutiny over its LGBT policies.

“I’ve gotten to know Karen so well,” Trump said at the Washington event. “She is a Marine Corps mom, a tremendous woman, a proud supporter of military families, and she just recently went back to teaching art classes at a Christian school. Thank you. Thank you, Karen. Terrific woman.”

Pence recently began work at the Immanuel Christian School in Springfield, Va., where she previously taught during the now-vice president’s service in Congress. The school prohibits unmarried heterosexual sex among staff, and also “homosexual or lesbian sexual activity.”

It’s unclear to what degree the policy has been enforced, however, or if gay students have been expelled for violating the school’s cultural expectations.

Trump’s description of Karen Pence as a military mother is a reference to the vice president’s only son, Marine 1st Lt. Michael Pence, who graduated from naval aviator training in September.
