Oscar-Nominated Director Slams Melania’s Risqué Photos, ‘Imagine if Michelle Obama Did This?’

Oscar-nominated director Ava DuVernay shaded first lady Melania Trump for her white privilege in a Twitter spree on Tuesday, comparing her treatment in the media to those of public figures of color, including former first lady Michelle Obama.

The acclaimed black director and producer took to Twitter to welcome Black History Month and point out how prominent white public figures, such as the First Lady and how she uses her white privilege.

She notes that if a black person, such Michelle Obama, were in her place, society would respond in a different manner.

“When people ask me what white privilege is… Imagine what would happen if this was Michelle,” she wrote on Tuesday, sharing a picture of Melania from her modeling days wearing a very revealing top that nearly exposed her chest.

She argues that Melania benefits from white privilege in that she can have risqué modeling pictures and not face harsh criticism for it, whereas if Michelle Obama had posed for such images, it would be a very different story.

She ended her Twitter rant by urging her followers to observe Black History Month.

“Sometimes it’s hard for white folks to grasp the notion of white privilege. My three posts below are real world, easy examples of how the system we live in favors some and not others. If you’d like to acknowledge Black History Month in some way, recognize this within yourself,” she said.

DuVernay has been an outspoken social activist and earlier this week boycotted the Super Bowl and the NFL in solidarity with Colin Kaepernick. She’s also adamant about giving women and people of color jobs in the movie industry.
