WATCH: GOP Rep Tells Democratic Rep of Latino Descent to ‘Go Back to Puerto Rico’ on House Floor

In a shocking relevation, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said that a Republican congressman had told Democratic Rep. Tony Cárdenas to “return to Puerto Rico.”

Hoyer called for civility in his floor remarks, and began by referencing the resolution the House passed rebuking Rep. Steve King‘s racist remarks.

“We have just been through a very difficult week, in which one of our members was — a review and disapproval was passed almost unanimously, I think, with just one vote opposed to it on our side,” Hoyer said.

Hoyer then revealed that “Unfortunately, at a height, I know, of a lot of emotion, one of our members, respected member of our caucus, Tony Cardenas, was met with — who is, by the way, from California — was met with a call from the other side of the aisle to return to Puerto Rico.”

“We ought to all be cognizant of the fact that we need to be civil to one another, we need to be polite to one another, even,” Hoyer continued.

Hoyer concluded by noting that while the two parties may disagree, “I would hope that we could refrain from any implications which have any undertones of prejudice or racism, or any kind of ‘ism’ that would diminish the character and integrity of one of our fellow members.”

Cardenas was among the delegation of 36 Democratic lawmakers who attended the Latino Victory Fund’s annual summit in Puerto Rico last weekend.
