Trump Has Tantrum Before Texas Trip, ‘I Didn’t Pound The Table, I Didn’t Pound The Table. That Is a Lie!’

Donald Trump accused Democrats of lying about his conduct during a Wednesday meeting that imploded when Democrats refused to budge on his demand for $5.6 Billion for southern border wall funding.

“I didn’t pound the table. I didn’t pound the table. That is a lie,” Trump told reporters as he departed the White House for a trip to the U.S. border with Mexico.

“I don’t have temper tantrums. … All of that narrative is a lie,” Trump said.

Republicans who attended the meeting previously defended Trump’s conduct in talks to end a near three-week partial government shutdown triggered by Trump’s bid for border wall funds. About 800,000 federal workers will miss a paycheck Friday if there’s no deal.

Trump said in a Wednesday tweet that he walked out of the meeting with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi when Pelosi indicated she would never support wall funds.

“Just left a meeting with Chuck and Nancy, a total waste of time,” Trump tweeted after the 15-minute sit-down. “I asked what is going to happen in 30 days if I quickly open things up, are you going to approve Border Security which includes a Wall or Steel Barrier? Nancy said, NO. I said bye-bye, nothing else works!”

Schumer called Trump’s departure “somewhat unbecoming of a presidency” after the meeting.

“He sort of slammed the table, and when Leader Pelosi said she didn’t agree with the wall, he just walked out and said, ‘We have nothing to discuss,'” Schumer told reporters.

Trump, who has threatened to declare a national emergency and build the wall without congressional support, said Thursday he likely will do so without a legislative deal. He is seeking $5.7 billion for a physical barrier along the border.

“The only way you have a strong border is you have a wall or steel barrier,” he said.
