Sarah Huckabee Sanders Finally Admits She Lied About ‘Terrorists’ at the Border

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders finally admitted on Wednesday that she misstated statistics about border security in recent days, or in other words…lied.

Over the weekend, Sanders was fact-checked by “Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace about her claim that about 4,000 known or suspected terrorists have been apprehended at the U.S.-Mexico border.

Fox & Friends co-host Ainsley Earhardt put Sanders on the spot about her statement on Wednesday morning.

“Sarah, there were some discrepancies with some numbers,” Earhardt said. “You had said that border officials detained 4,000 suspected terrorists last year and then the Customs and Border Patrol revealed the real numbers and only six people on the security watch list were detained over six months.”

“I should have said 4,000 at all points of entry, not just at the southern border,” Sanders responded.

But the press secretary then downplayed her error.

“The bottom line is whether it’s one, four, fourteen or four thousand, one terrorist coming into our country in illegal fashion to do us harm is one too many. We have to take every step possible to prevent that from happening, including protecting our most vulnerable points of entry, and we know that to be the southern border,” Sanders said. “We have to do what is necessary to protect our border, to protect the people, and that’s exactly what President Trump has done, and that’s exactly what he laid out in his speech last night.”

After the interview with Wallace went viral and critics expressed concern that the misleading claim could have been part of an effort to gin up support for border wall funding, the Homeland Security Department put out a “MYTH/FACT” press release. It explains 3,755 known or suspected terrorists were stopped from entering the U.S. in fiscal 2017 and that the majority made the attempt by air.

Meanwhile, a senior administration official told CNN that government data shows only 12 known or suspected terrorists were caught at the southern border between October 2017 and October 2018.
