Trump Whines That No One Wants His Border Wall and Calls Democrats ‘Absolute Hypocrites’ In Weird Video

Donald Trump appeared to step back from comments suggesting he’d take responsibility for a government shutdown on Thursday, tweeting, “Let’s not do a shutdown,” but also saying in a video accompanying the tweet, “Whatever it takes to get border security, I will do it.”

Trump in the video upped his political rhetoric in his push for wall funding, calling Democrats hypocrites for not financing his border wall while supporting other border security measures over the years.

“Democrats are absolute hypocrites,” Trump declared in a video posted on Twitter Thursday afternoon with the caption, “Let’s not do a shutdown, Democrats — do what’s right for the American People!”

“All along, they’ve been supporting walls and supporting fences and supporting all sorts of border security,” Trump says in the video, before cutting to Democratic politicians arguing against illegal immigration and for border security.

Trump is asking Congress to approve $5 billion in border wall funding before both chambers head home for Christmas. House and Senate Democrats are unwilling to give the president any more than $1.6 billion for the border wall, a disagreement that has raised fears of a possible partial government shutdown.

Trump called a meeting Tuesday with Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, to work out a solution that would both fund the government and his border wall. That meeting did not go smoothly.

The president let the cameras roll as Schumer and Pelosi challenged Trump’s request for more funding. Trump argued back that Americans are demanding a barrier to keep out illegal immigrants.

The 15-minute Oval Office meeting went awry after Pelosi warned that Trump’s hard-line position on the wall would lead to a “Trump shutdown.”

Trump ended the public part of the negotiation by saying he would be happy to shut down the government, and take responsibility for it, if it meant he could secure funding for “border security.”
