Donald Trump and wife Melania made a surprise trip to Iraq to visit U.S. troops serving there, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced on Wednesday.

“President Trump and the First Lady traveled to Iraq late on Christmas night to visit with our troops and Senior Military leadership to thank them for their service, their success, and their sacrifice and to wish them a Merry Christmas,” Sanders wrote in a tweet.

The surprise Iraq trip is Trump’s first visit to a combat zone. It comes a week Trump announced a withdrawal of U.S. troops from Syria, as well as the subsequent resignation of Defense Secretary James Mattis.

Melania decided that since she was going to a combat zone, what better to wear than combat boots?

After all, this is a woman who likes to send a message with her clothing.
